SN Medical College Could Become AIIMS

Agra: 150 year old Agra Medical College could soon be upgraded to AIIMS status. According to the principal of Medical College, Dr. Deokinandan, the state government has finally recommended to the Union Health Ministry to recognize one of India's oldest medical institutions, Sarojini Naidu Medical College of Agra, as one of the half a dozen new medical centers with All India Institutes of Medical Sciences status.

UP's principal secretary medical education has on the advice of the Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav initiated the move which can have far reaching fallouts in the modernization of the medical infrastructure in the state.

Agra Medical College is considered as a parent body of many institutions, having provided a steady stream of competent medical professionals who have occupied high positions all over India and abroad, says principal who has been at pains to project a new profile of the college which has a sprawling campus in the heart of the city. "There was a time when even Delhi did not have the same level of medical facilities which Agra had during the British period," recalls Deokinandan.
Doctors at the Medical College were upbeat at the prospect of their institution being recognized as a premier center of health education and treatment. "The whole state would stand to benefit since Agra had extensive facilities and people from all parts could easily reach Agra which had borders with Haryana, MP and Rajasthan," according to the principal who told the www.mediabharti.com that the basic infrastructure was already available and there was surplus land for new construction.
